Osmosis experiments

Visking tubing is an artificial partially permeable membrane :

  • smaller molecules similar water and glucose laissez passer through its microscopic holes
  • larger molecules like starch and sucrose cannot pass through information technology

The slideshow shows a typical experiment using Visking tubing and sucrose solution:

Part one of four. A beaker of water. A capillary tube with visking tubing attached is partly submerged. The visking tubing contains a sucrose solution. The liquid rises up the capillary tube.

Part two of four. A beaker of sucrose solution.  A capillary tube with visking tubing attached is partly submerged. The visking tubing is half full of water.  The liquid level in the tubing falls.

Part three of four. A beaker of water. A capillary tube with visking tubing attached is partly submerged. The visking tubing is full of water. There is no change in liquid level.

three. The Visking tubing is full of water and in that location is no change in the liquid level

Part four of four. A beaker of sucrose solution.  A capillary tube with visking tubing attached is partly submerged. The visking tubing is full of sucrose solution. There is no change in liquid level.

iv. The Visking tubing is full of sucrose solution and there is no change in the liquid level

The sucrose solution is hypertonic to the water – information technology is a more full-bodied solution. There is a internet movement of water molecules, by osmosis , from the h2o exterior to the sucrose solution inside the Visking tubing. This makes the liquid level in the capillary tube rise.

A less concentrated solution is hypotonic to a more full-bodied solution, while two solutions at the aforementioned concentration are isotonic .

The table summarises the results of the four combinations of water and ten% sucrose in the experiments, showing the movement of water and solute across a concentration gradient.
